Screen Recorder
Record your screen directly in your browser. No installation required.
๐ Complete Guide to Browser-Based Screen Recording
Screen recording has become an essential skill for content creators, educators, support professionals, and anyone who needs to capture their screen activity. Traditional screen recording requires downloading and installing software, but our browser-based Screen Recorder uses modern web APIs to record directly in your browserโno installation, no plugins, and complete privacy since everything happens locally on your device.
The Screen Capture API, supported by all modern browsers, allows websites to request permission to record your screen, window, or browser tab. Combined with the MediaRecorder API for encoding video, this creates a powerful, zero-installation screen recording solution that rivals dedicated software for most use cases.
๐ฌ Recording Options Explained
| Option | Choices | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Audio Source | No Audio, System, Microphone, Both | Tutorials need mic, gameplay needs system audio |
| Quality | 480p, 720p, 1080p | 1080p for publishing, 720p for sharing, 480p for quick demos |
| Format | WebM, MP4 | WebM for web use, MP4 for wider compatibility |
๐ฑ What You Can Record
When you click "Start Recording," your browser will ask what you want to share. You have three options:
| Source Type | What It Captures | System Audio | Best Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entire Screen | Everything on your selected monitor | Yes (with checkbox) | Multi-application workflows, desktop tours |
| Window | Specific application window | Usually no | Software tutorials, app demos |
| Browser Tab | Single browser tab content | Yes (tab audio) | Web app demos, video capture, presentations |
๐ฏ Common Use Cases
- Software Tutorials: Record step-by-step guides showing how to use applications, websites, or tools. Add microphone narration for voice-over explanations.
- Bug Reports: Capture exactly what happens when a bug occurs. Developers appreciate video bug reports that show the exact steps to reproduce issues.
- Educational Content: Teachers can record lessons, presentations, and demonstrations for students to review at their own pace.
- Product Demos: Create professional demonstrations of your product's features for marketing, sales, or customer onboarding.
- Gaming Clips: Capture gameplay highlights, achievements, or funny moments to share with friends or on social media.
- Support Documentation: Create visual guides for customer support, reducing the need for lengthy written explanations.
- Meeting Recording: Record web-based meetings or presentations when the platform doesn't offer recording features.
- Social Media Content: Create screen-based content for TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts.
๐ Privacy Guarantee: Your recordings never leave your device. All processing happens locally in your browser using the MediaRecorder API. We don't have servers that receive your videoโyou download directly from your browser's memory. This makes it safe for recording sensitive content like financial dashboards, private messages, or confidential work materials.
๐ก Tips for Better Recordings
- Close unnecessary apps: Reduce CPU load and prevent notifications from appearing in your recording
- Clean your desktop: If recording full screen, remove sensitive icons and files from view
- Use a good microphone: Built-in laptop mics often sound poor; consider a USB microphone for narration
- Plan your recording: Know what you'll show before starting to minimize editing needs
- Check audio levels: Test your microphone volume before important recordings
- Enable "Share system audio": When prompted, check this box if you need to capture sounds from applications
- Record short segments: For long content, record in segments to prevent browser memory issues
๐ Understanding Video Formats
| Format | Compatibility | File Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| WebM | Chrome, Firefox, Edge, modern players | Smaller | Native browser format, best quality/size ratio |
| MP4 | Universal (all devices/players) | Varies | Requires conversion, widest compatibility |
โ Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely not! Your recording is processed entirely in your browser using the MediaRecorder API. The video data is stored in your browser's memory until you download it. Nothing is ever sent to any serverโnot even temporarily. You can verify this by recording while offline (after the page loads). This architecture ensures complete privacy for sensitive recordings like work materials, personal conversations, or financial information.
System audio capture depends on browser, operating system, and what you're sharing. On Chrome, when the share dialog appears, look for a "Share system audio" or "Share audio" checkboxโthis must be enabled. System audio typically only works when sharing "Entire Screen" or "Chrome Tab," not when sharing a specific window. macOS requires additional permissions in System Preferences > Privacy > Screen Recording. Some applications (like Zoom) capture audio through protected channels that browsers can't access.
WebM is the native format that browsers use for recordingโit's what the MediaRecorder API produces directly. It uses VP8 or VP9 video codecs and Opus audio, offering excellent quality at smaller file sizes. MP4 is a container format using H.264 video codec that's universally compatible with all devices, players, and editing software. For web use, sharing online, or modern devices, WebM is usually fine. For maximum compatibility (older devices, certain editing software, iOS sharing), MP4 is safer. Our tool saves as WebM but labels it appropriately.
There's no hard time limit imposed by our tool or by browser APIs. However, practical limits exist based on your device's available memory. The recording is stored in RAM until you download it, so very long recordings (30+ minutes at 1080p) can consume several gigabytes of memory. If your browser runs low on memory, the recording might fail or your system may slow down. For recordings over 15-20 minutes, consider using dedicated screen recording software that writes directly to disk, or record in shorter segments.
Several factors affect recording quality: First, check your Quality settingโselect "High (1080p)" for best results. If your computer struggles (dropped frames, choppy video), try "Medium (720p)" instead. High CPU usage from other applications can cause the encoder to drop quality. Browser recordings use variable bitrate encoding, so fast-moving content (games, videos) may show compression artifacts. For professional-quality recordings with consistent bitrate and codec control, dedicated recording software like OBS offers more options.
Unfortunately, the Screen Capture API (getDisplayMedia) is not supported on mobile browsers for security and privacy reasons. iOS and Android have built-in screen recording features you can use instead: On iPhone, add Screen Recording to Control Center (Settings > Control Center). On Android, swipe down for Quick Settings and look for Screen Record. These native solutions actually work better on mobile since they have full system access and can capture all audio sources.
